2011 Australian Age Wrap Up

Young breaststroke rising star, Alex Milligan (13) was the stand out individual performer at the 2011 Australian Age Swimming Championships held at the brand new South Australia Aquatic Centre in Adelaide this week. The 14 and under boys relay teams comprising of Milligan, Andrew Warnock, Kyle Robinson, and Braga Verhage placed 6th in the 4x50m Medley and 8th in the 4x50m Freestyle relays, smashing their entry times and rankings in the process.

D'Orsogna to swim in Shanghai

Twenty year old Tommaso D’Orsogna has qualified for his 5th Australian Open Team, gaining selection for the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China this July. Capping off a tough 8 days of racing at the Australian titles in Sydney in early April, D’Orsogna has qualified to swim in both men’s relay teams (4x100m Freestyle and 4x200m Freestyle). The Telstra Dolphins Australian Swim Team will take a 52-strong team to the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, which includes superstars Geoff Huegill, Leisel Jones, Stephanie Rice, and former West Coaster Eamon Sullivan.

In all, six West Aussies have been selected to compete in China. City of Perth’s Blair Evans, Travis Nederpelt and Rhys Mainstone (Open Water) join three AIS-based WA athletes D’Orsogna, Merindah Dingjan (Southside Wesley Penrhos) and Sally Foster (Central Aquatic). The 2011 FINA World Championships will be Tommaso’s second World Championships appearance, having won bronze at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Italy. Tommaso has since represented Australia at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California.

West Coast Swimming Club wishes Tommaso the very best wishes for the World Championships in Shanghai which is an excellent preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Age Group Swim Stars head to Adelaide

More than 1500 of Australia’s best young swimmers will head to Adelaide this weekend for the 2011 Australian Age Swimming Championships to be held at the new South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Marion from Monday 18 April to Saturday 23 April.
Swimmers from all over Australia and New Zealand will compete in age group racing from ages 12 to 18, with close to 5000 entries, including some 380 relay entries.
Commonwealth Games silver medallists Samantha Marshall from Sydney and Tessa Wallace from Caloundra will contest the breaststroke events in the 17-18 years, while Kenneth To who was last week named on the team for the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, will swim his pet event the 200m IM in the boys 17-18 years.
South Australian backstroke specialists Whitney Ireland, Jenni O’Neil and Ben Edmonds from the Norwood club and coached by Peter Bishop will look to lead the way for the locals, while Bonnie Macdonald, Jessicah Ashwood and Olympic bronze medallist Cate Campbell will be some of the Australian team members to watch over the six days.
Swimming Australia National Youth Coach Vince Raleigh said the six-days of competition is the next step in finding our future Olympians and he will show particular interest in those swimmers aged around 14, 15 and 16.
“The Australian Age Swimming Championships is where we find our next generation of Olympians and swimmers who perform well here will be ear-marked for future representation and ultimately success in Rio in 2016 and beyond,” said Raleigh.
“This meet is a chance to step up at age group level against national competition and from there we’ll be looking to develop athletes even further to see them reach their full potential in the years to come.”
Every gold medal winner at the Australian Age Championships will be invited to the National Youth Camp in Thredbo in September, while the championships will also act as selection trials for the World Junior Championships to be held in Lima, Peru, and the Commonwealth Youth Games in Isle of Man in September.
“There are some great opportunities for our younger swimmers to go on to perform internationally this year and we’d particularly like to thank the Australian Commonwealth Games Association for their support in assisting junior athletes who have the potential to be selected in future Australian Commonwealth Games teams,” said Raleigh.
The six-day championships will also be the first major event to be held at the newly opened South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Marion, with Swimming Australia also set to hold the Australian Short Course Championships at the venue in early July.
The State Aquatic Centre will open to the public at the completion of the event and Swimming Australia would like to thank Events South Australia for their support in hosting the 2011 Australian Age Championships.

Christmas Eve training with Tommaso proves popular.

Approximately 70 swimmers turned out this morning to take up the opportunity to train with and speak to West Coast's very own Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Tommaso D'Orsogna, who is back home for Christmas from the AIS. The morning started with warm up followed by stations working on a variety of skills. The session ended with Tommaso demonstrating his powerful starts and turns. After some very "nutritious" muffins, fruit mince pies etc kindly supplied by Mel Tantrum all the swimmers sat on the grass to listen and ask questions of Tommaso. Holding and wearing the Rome World Champs Bronze Medal and the Delhi 2010 Gold Medal was popular, particularly amongst the younger swimmers. Thanks to Tommaso for coming down and sharing some of his experiences as well as patiently signing items and getting his photo taken. We look forward to seeing him around the pool some more whilst he is home.

Superior Racing Skills Workshop a great success

Part of the West Coast Swimming Club Education Seminar Series

More than 45 West Coast swimmers (plus several parents) attended the 2nd Education Seminar of the 2010/11 season held at Challenge Stadium on Saturday 11 December 2010. Entitled the “Superior Racing Skills” Workshop, the session covered the sprint freestyle technique of World Record Holder Roland Schoeman, a breakdown of freestyle turns, plus a full analysis of breaststroke and butterfly turns.

Immediately following the lecture, the team of seven Mel Tantrum Coaching team coaches conducted a practical workshop in the outdoor 10 lane pool, covering the teaching progressions of all the racing skills covered in the theory session. Teams of 10-12 swimmers rotated around the skills stations during the 1-hour practical workout and covered starts, turns, finishes, and relay changeovers.

The Breaststroke and Butterfly turn progressions included the following 5 Steps:
-       Step 1: The Approach (eyes down)
-       Step 2: The Tuck (point your toes)
-       Step 3: The Elbow (Karate elbow)
-       Step 4: The Roll (roll back)
-       Step 5: The Drive (plant your feet)

The DVDs that were shown during the lecture can be viewed (and ordered from the USA) online. There were two different DVD collections:

Go Swim Series www.goswim.tv <http://www.goswim.tv>

Important Athlete Advisory: Methylhexaneamine

Australian athletes are being warned by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority to carefully consider their use of supplements following nine positive Australian test results for the prohibited stimulant methylhexaneamine.

There has been increasing evidence that methylhexaneamine is present in supplements and other products and this spike in positive test results is a timely reminder to the sporting community to exercise the utmost caution in checking the contents of supplements and other products that athletes use.

All swimmers should refer to the important fact sheet attached for further information on methylhexaneamine.

Gold Strike for West Coast at State Open Championships

Three West Coast swimmers have struck gold at the 2010 HFMF State Open Championships at Challenge Stadium on 4 and 5 September. After a 4-year absence from State level competition, 22-year old Lauren Winter won the sprint double, claiming the Women's WA State Open 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly Championship titles. It has been a gradual return to top line competition for Winter, who is overcoming the challenges of shoulder surgery and balancing a slow and steady return to training with full time work. The Dalkeith swimmer returned from the USA earlier this year after a 4-year scholarship at the University of Florida.

Matt Smith (21) showed his sprint form by taking out the 50m Breaststroke title ahead of an in-form field and also claimed the bronze in the 100m Breaststroke. The future looks bright for the UWA Student, with a Top 8 finish at the National Open Championships in Sydney next April firmly in his sights.

Young gun Mark Ferguson (16) won gold in the 100m Backstroke with a zippy 57.64, holding off a strong field several years his senior. Ferguson capped off a strong winter season with a silver in the 50m Backstroke, and 4th in the 50m Butterfly and 5th in the 100m Butterfly. Ferguson is heading off to the State Teams Age Championships to be held at the AIS in Canberra later this month.

Other West Coast swimmers in Top 8 action were Ben Tapley (7th 50m and 100m Breaststroke), Sam Forward (7th 100m Butterfly), and Kieran Clancy-Lowe (8th 50m Freestyle),

Our Men's 4x100m Medley Relay Team of Mark Ferguson, Ben Tapley, Sam Forward and Paul Laver placed 4th while the 4x100m Freestyle Team of Laver, Liam Hughes, Ferguson and Forward placed 5th.

Our young age groupers also performed well with 14 year old Alisha Hodgetts and 15 year old Madi Hopkins achieving PBs and consistently placing in the Top 16.

The hard work now begins for our West Coast swimmers as they enter the next phase of training in preparation for the State Age LC Championships 18-21 December and the State Open LC Championships 21-23 January 2011.

2010 HFMF State Junior Short Course Championships

Ten-year old Taj Jones wrapped up the 2010 HFMF State Junior Short Course Championships this weekend as West Coast’s leading medal winner, bagging five individual gold medals, three silvers and two bronzes and adding four relay medals to his swag. The rising star also claimed runner-up “swimmer of the meet” after competing in ten individual events and setting six new PBs.

The team of 33 West Coast junior swimmers (aged 12 years and under) placed 3rd overall on the team point score (538.5 points), behind the new powerhouse Western Sprint Club (which is the recently merged Riverton Blue Marlins and Western Sprint Clubs) on 718 points and Breakers on 613 points.

Our newest state champions included breaststrokers Max Contessi, Zach Farrell and Cooper Lindsay. Our team won a total of 47 medals (12 gold, 18 silver and 17 bronze) with multiple medal winners including Shelby Carstens, Tom Cumming, Jared Hill, Kane Hughes, William Lantzke, Hadley Lindsay, Salwa Sadek, Beatrice Tay, and Braga Verhage.

It was especially pleasing to record a PB percentage of 60%.

Congratulations to all West Coast juniors for their efforts at the State Junior Short Course Championships. The Long Course season is just two weeks away and we look forward to even better results this summer.

The summary of results is attached.

As this is a State Championship event, it is important for all members to note that they must notify Swimming WA (and the Club) if they do not intend on swimming in any of their nominated events. Apart from being common courtesy to give meet officials the option to re-seed events, it may also help individuals and/or the Club avoid any potential SWA penalties. You must also organize a swap if you are unable to fulfill your spot in the Volunteer Roster.

State Record Tumbles

West Coast Swimming Club's 4x50m Medley Relay Team broke an incrediable 6 WA State Records during the first session of the 2010 HFMF State Age Short Course Swimming Championships at Challenge Stadium today. The 13 and under boys relay team of Andrew Warnock, Kyle Robinson, Brandon Tay and Geordi Tsirigotis swam their way into the record books by breaking a record that has stood since 1997. The "young guns" team recorded a time of 2:03.78 to sneak under the old mark of 2:03.80 set by the Aqua Attack club some 13 years ago. The swim broke all 6 records including the WA All Comers State, WA All Comers Club, WA All Time State, WA All Time Club, WA Residential State and WA Residential Club. The boy's swim was one of the highlights of the heats session, with almost all swimmers recording PBs and several making finals for this evening's session. Based on rankings, the 13 and under boys team are hot favourites to win gold and perhaps set another record in the 4x50m Freestyle relay next weekend.

The Championships continue tomorrow and next weekend.

2010 Telstra Australian Short Course Championships

West Coast Swimming Club was represented by two swimmers at the 2010 Telstra Australian Short Course Championships in Brisbane from 13-18 July. AIS-based teenager Tommaso D'Orsogna had a fantastic meet winning the 200m IM ahead of up-and-coming Kenneth To (Trinity Grammar) and Jayden Hadler (Chandler). In the 100m IM, places were reversed, with To just touching out D’Orsogna and John Goo (Ryde Carlisle) claiming the bronze.

In addition to the IM events, D’Orsogna competed in the three sprint freestyle events, placing 2nd in the 200m Freestyle (1:45.22), 3rd in the 100m Freestyle (47.63) and 8th in 50m dash (22.25). D’Orsogna’s efforts have been rewarded with a place on the Australian Swim Team for the FINA World Short Course Championships to be held in Dubai, UAE in December. 2010 will be a busy year for D’Orsogna on the international swim scene, with spots on the Pan Pacific Championships, Delhi Commonwealth Games, and now the World Short Course teams.

Lauren Winter, 22, made a welcome return to top level Australian competition after an absence of four years. In the 50m Butterfly, Winter placed 16th equal in the heats, and had to contest a swim-off with Sydney-based Nicole Mee. Unfortunately, Mee produced an outstanding swim to out-touch Winter and earn a spot in the semi-finals. However, it was not all bad news for Winter, who produced a career-best PB of 27.84 and improved her meet ranking from 38th to 17th. In the 50m Freestyle, Winter placed 34th in a time of 26.30.

West Coast Swimming Club finished the meet ranked 21st on the club point score, second WA Club behind City of Perth.
