Tommaso D'Orsogna Crowned Swimming WA's 2010 Vorgee Swimmer of the Year
West Coast Swimmer and Australian Institute of Sport Athlete, Tommaso D’Orsogna has been crowned Swimming WA’s 2010 Vorgee Swimmer of the Year at this morning’s awards ceremony held at the Hyatt Regency Perth. This category presented some tough competition which included national gold medallists, Blair Evans and Rhys Mainstone.
At the young age of 19 years D’Orsogna has a long list of swimming highlights to his name. A stand out performance in the relay team at the FINA World Championships earned him a bronze medal in a Commonwealth Record time. More recently at the 2010 Telstra Australian Swimming Championships, D’Orsogna booked himself a spot on the Commonwealth Games Team destined for Delhi.
“It is always a hard decision for the judging panel to select only one winner in each category, especially with such a high calibre of athletes up for selection. We are thrilled to present Tommaso with one of Swimming WA’s highest honours. His hard work and dedication has certainly paid off and we wish him the very best of success at Pan Pacific Championships and the Commonwealth Games” said Swimming WA’s Executive Director Simon Taylor.

Winter Coaching Programme
Due to changes in lane allocations at Challenge Stadium (ie access to indoor short course lanes for winter), the squad structure has been reviewed and some changes to squads and training times will be introduced on Monday 31 May 2010. This structure will remain in place until 6th September 2010 when the indoor pool reverts back to long course mode for summer. The squad structure will again be reviewed in September for the summer season and changes implemented if necessary. For the winter season, Mel will oversee the entire program and coach the National Open Squad, Chris Jongsma (CJ) will coach the National Age Squad, Kim MacCarthy will coach the National Age Development Squad, Glenn Gerber + CJ will coach the Intermediate Advanced Squad, and Steven Schmidt will continue to coach the Intermediate Squad. For the junior squad, Daniel Rodgers, Lil Duckett, CJ and Steve Schmidt will continue as Junior Squad Coaches.
Now, as always, the focus is on long-term swimmer development, following a model developed and recommended by Swimming Australia. The squad structure has been carefully designed to provide a pathway for athletes to progress from Junior Squads to the National Open Squad, within the one program.
All our coaches are professional, fully qualified, ASCTA members. They care about swimmer development and are passionate about providing the best environment for you and your (your child's) swimming career.

Injury Management and Prevention Study - Volunteers Required
Julie Hardt, PhD candidate at the School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health, University of Western Australia is conducting research into the prevention and management of injury in competitive swimming. To date, little to no research has been done to investigate the system of behaviours managing injury and its consequences in the world of competitive swimming.Julie is recruiting participants in her research study and this includes swimmers aged 13+ years in West Coast Swimming Club. Your participation will be a vital contribution towards developing the first standardised injury management protocol for swimming clubs. The results will be shared with you after the study is completed, and these results may offer valuable insights for you and the continual development of your club.
The study will last for this “short course season” and your involvement will include completing a series of online questionnaires. Julie will be at the pool over the next few weeks to recruit swimmers for this study. If you have any questions, please ask Mel at the pool.

West Coast Swimming Club's own Rome World Championship relay bronze medallist Tommaso D’Orsogna will lead a 34-strong West Australian contingent at the Telstra Australian Swimming Championships starting today in Sydney.
The 19-year-old D’Orsogna who had an impressive 2009, which saw him bag a bronze medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the Rome World Championships, will be looking to secure an individual swim in the 200m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games, after his third place finish at last year’s national trials.
A top two finish in the 200m freestyle at this year’s trials will guarantee the AIS-based Medical Science student an individual swim at the Pan Pacs in the USA and the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, while his form in the 100m will also have him on the sprint radar, after clocking a personal best of 48.41 at the AIS meet in November last year.
D’Orsogna kicked off his busy week-long campaign this morning with a hit out in the less-favoured 50m Backstroke event, clocking a new PB of 26.61 and qualifying for the semi-finals to be swum this evening. The heats of his 200m Freestyle event will be held tomorrow morning. Full coverage of the 2010 Telstra Australian Championships is on ONE HD.

Alterations to January Training Times
Challenge Stadium has had to re-allocate lanes to all user groups over the next two weeks due to the Waterpolo National Championships and the SunSmart WA State Open Championships. As such, there will be a few minor changes to training times and these are reflected in the attached program. All swim clubs that use Challenge Stadium will have reduced access to their usual lane space, so the next two weeks will require us to condense our normal allocation of lanes. The next "whole team" training session will be held on Australia Day from 8-10am, so please come along in your favourite Aussie gear and colours. Other important dates rapidly approaching are the next club night on Thursday 4 February and the A Grade Pennant on Friday 5 February

West Coast Swimmers take home the Trophy at the Vic Park Xmas Carnival
A team of dedicated swimmers, parents and coach Kim arrived at the outdoor Aqualife Centre on Saturday all prepared to give their absolute best, regardless of the stifling 37 degree heat. The early arrivals picked a great shady spot for us to set up camp. Once settled the racing got underway. All of our swimmers performed well, particularly considering the temperature, with many medals being won in the individual events and the relay events. Full results will be available shortly. A great finish for the day was winning the overall trophy. Well done West Coast!! Individual times can be viewed here
Indian Ocean All Stars Tour
Swimming WA will be hosting a tour of Asia for our coaches and

interest please download Information Package.Revised Targeted Meets
The targeted meets have been revised as at 20th November. Click here to view.Dorsogna Cup
A very successful Dorsogna Cup was run on Sunday, although (unfortunately for us) Arena once again took home our trophy, with a narrow win.A big thankyou to all of the members who participated, from the swimmers who gave their best through to the parents who willingly gave up their time to help us run this meet. Also, thanks must go to our committee and officials, especially Geraldine,
who helped organise the day, without the planning that was put in the day would not have run so well. There were a total of 324 swimmers competing on the day.
We have had some very encouraging feedback from other clubs about how much they enjoyed the event. Hopefully they will pass the word and we will have an even bigger and better meet next year.
We must also acknowledge and thank Dorsogna who once again provided sponsorship for the day.
Full results can be found on the Swimming WA Website with additional commentary and photos to be in the next Stinger.
